Have you visited Nara Deer Park? What did you enjoy most about your visit?

Why I Love Nara Deer Park

If you are planning to explore Japan beyond the busy streets of Osaka and Kyoto, I highly recommend visiting Nara Deer Park. It is one of those places that leaves you with beautiful memories, especially if you love nature, animals, and peaceful outdoor walks.

I have personally visited Nara Park three or four times, and every visit has been a wonderful experience. Even after visiting several times, I still want to go back. There is something special about walking through a huge green park, seeing deer roaming freely, and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

For me, Nara Deer Park is not just a tourist attraction. It is a place where I can slow down, enjoy the surroundings, and spend time with some of Japan’s most famous animals.

Meeting the Friendly Deer at Nara Deer Park

One of the main reasons I love Nara Deer Park is its deer. They roam freely throughout the park, and you can often see them walking beside visitors, resting on the grass, or approaching people who have deer crackers.

The most enjoyable part for me is feeding them. Watching the deer come closer and interact with visitors makes the experience memorable. Some deer even bow their heads, which is one of the charming behaviors that many visitors enjoy seeing.

You can buy special deer crackers, known as shika senbei, from vendors around the park. Feeding the deer is a fun experience, but it is important to remember that they are still wild animals. They should always be treated with kindness and respect.

Every time I visit Nara Deer Park, I find something enjoyable about watching the deer. This is one of the biggest reasons I would happily return again.

Nara Deer Park During Sakura Season

If I had to choose a particularly beautiful time to visit Nara Deer Park, I would choose the cherry blossom season, also known as sakura season in Japan.

During spring, the park becomes even more attractive as cherry blossoms add soft pink and white colors to the landscape. Seeing the deer walking beneath the cherry blossom trees creates a beautiful combination of nature and wildlife.

For photography lovers, this season offers plenty of opportunities to capture memorable pictures. You can photograph the deer against the backdrop of cherry blossoms, enjoy a relaxing walk, or simply sit back and appreciate the scenery.

The exact blooming period varies from year to year, but cherry blossoms in Nara can generally be seen from late March into April, with some varieties blooming later.

Personally, I find Nara Deer Park especially enjoyable during this season. The combination of fresh spring air, beautiful flowers, and freely roaming deer makes the experience feel different from an ordinary sightseeing trip.

Enjoying the Evening Views Around Nara Deer Park

Another reason to explore Nara Deer Park is its beautiful natural scenery.

The park is enormous, with open grassy areas, trees, walking paths, and nearby historic attractions. There is plenty to explore, so I recommend taking your time instead of rushing through your visit.

One experience I particularly enjoy is walking toward the higher ground around the park. From the hillside area, you can enjoy a wider view of Nara and its surrounding landscape. In the evening, the scenery can be especially beautiful as the daylight begins to soften.

If you enjoy photography, I recommend allowing enough time to explore the area and find a viewpoint that suits you.

For visitors who want a more elevated panoramic view, Mount Wakakusa is a well-known nearby destination. However, access to the mountain’s grassy slopes can be seasonal, so check the current opening information before planning your visit.

Is Nara Deer Park Worth Visiting in Summer?

Yes, Nara Deer Park can be visited throughout the year, and many tourists continue to visit during summer.

However, personally, summer is not my favorite season for exploring this park. The main reason is its enormous size. Walking around the different areas can take quite a lot of time and energy, and the summer heat can make a long outdoor walk less comfortable.

Even so, summer visitors can still enjoy the deer, the greenery, and the park’s peaceful atmosphere. If you decide to visit during the hotter months, plan your walk around the weather, carry water, and take breaks whenever necessary.

For my personal preference, I would choose spring, especially during the cherry blossom season. The scenery makes walking around Nara Deer Park feel even more rewarding.

Nara Deer Park Is Huge: Be Ready to Walk

One thing I want first-time visitors to understand is that Nara Deer Park is much larger than it might appear in photographs.

There is much more to explore than the areas where most tourists take pictures with deer. You can spend time walking through open spaces, visiting nearby temples and shrines, enjoying the natural scenery, and discovering quieter corners of the park.

Because of its size, comfortable walking shoes are a good idea. If you want to explore several attractions in one visit, allow at least half a day rather than trying to see everything in a hurry.

You do not have to visit every corner to enjoy Nara Deer Park. Even a relaxed walk, some time with the deer, and a few beautiful photographs can make the trip worthwhile.

Please Treat the Deer at Nara Deer Park with Kindness and Respect

There is one important point I want to mention about visiting Nara Deer Park.

Occasionally, videos appear on social media showing tourists behaving badly toward the deer, such as hitting them, chasing them, or attempting to ride on them. I find this kind of behavior deeply disappointing because the deer are an important part of what makes Nara special.

The deer are wild animals and should never be treated as toys or entertainment. Hurting, frightening, or chasing them is unacceptable. Such behavior can also create safety risks for both the animals and visitors.

The deer have long been protected as a special part of Nara’s natural and cultural heritage. They deserve to be treated with care, just as we would expect people to respect wildlife anywhere else in the world.

If you visit Nara Deer Park, please follow these simple rules:

  • Feed the deer only their designated deer crackers, known as shika senbei.
  • Never hit, chase, ride on, or deliberately frighten them.
  • Do not tease them by pretending to offer food and then taking it away.
  • Avoid touching or grabbing them, and give them space when they move away.
  • Keep plastic, paper, and other rubbish away from the deer, and take your rubbish with you.
  • Remember that deer can react unpredictably, even when they appear friendly.

Enjoying a place also means helping to protect it. I hope everyone who visits Nara Deer Park can leave with wonderful memories while helping keep the deer safe.

How to Get to Nara Deer Park

Nara Deer Park is located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, and is accessible by train from Osaka and Kyoto.

The two main stations for visitors are:

  • Kintetsu-Nara Station: Approximately an 8-minute walk to the park area.
  • JR Nara Station: Approximately a 20-minute walk, depending on your destination within the park.

You can also use local buses to reach different attractions around the park. Because the park is so large, your walking time will depend on which areas you want to explore.

Admission to Nara Park itself is free, making it a great destination for travelers who want to enjoy Japan’s natural beauty without paying an entrance fee.

My Final Recommendation: Is Nara Deer Park Worth Visiting?

After visiting Nara Park three or four times, I can honestly say that Nara Deer Park remains one of the places I want to visit again.

I love the deer, the peaceful atmosphere, the beautiful cherry blossoms, and the scenic views around the park. Feeding the deer is a particularly enjoyable experience, and the park offers something different depending on the season you visit.

Although summer is not my personal favorite because of the amount of walking involved, I can still understand why so many tourists visit throughout the year.

If you are visiting Japan and have time to explore Nara, I would definitely recommend adding Nara Deer Park to your itinerary. Go with comfortable shoes, take your time, enjoy the scenery, and treat the deer with kindness.

For me, the best travel experiences are not just about visiting famous places. They are about enjoying the moment and creating memories that make you want to return.
